An 8-year-old autistic boy who slipped away from his Jersey City school yesterday and turned up several hours later in Union City disappeared amid the activity of school dismissal, school officials said.

The boy, who participates in the Casper after-school program at School 27 in the Heights, went missing at around 3 p.m. shortly after the rest of the school’s students were dismissed for the day, according to Maryann Dickar, a spokeswoman for the Jersey City Public Schools.

The student’s teacher brought him to the Casper program when school let out at 2:45 p.m. and put him on a line of students going to the cafeteria to receive their snack, Dickar wrote in an email to The Jersey Journal.

A teacher’s aide was receiving the students on line while the teacher took her non-Casper students to their buses. But when the teacher returned to the cafeteria at 3 p.m. she noticed the 8-year-old boy was missing, Dickar said.
